Looking for a way to help the survivors of Hurricane Harvey?

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As we watch the news reporting on the impact of Hurricane Harvey, you may be wondering what you can do to help the people there. The answers to that question aren't always simple - and will evolve over time - but one thing that will undoubtedly be needed are money and cleaning buckets!  These have been requested by our NYAC and by our district's Disaster Preparation and Response Committee.  Updates on the situation from our Annual Conference's Coordination of Mission Ministries, Rev. Tom Vencuss, can be found on the NYAC website.  

For those interested in giving financially to UMCOR's efforts, you can give online or by giving through "Advance #901670".  100% of your financial gift goes directly to UMCOR's disaster relief efforts.  (Operating costs are funded differently.)  UMCOR has prepared a half-sheet bulletin insert you can use to share with your congregation.  

Hygiene kits and cleaning bucket kits are given to families who have experienced a disaster like a flood. If you'd like to donate all or part of a kit, please contact the Bayport United Methodist Church (631-472-0770) or East Quogue United Methodist Church (631-653-5351). Our Mission Central HUBs are ready to receive your gifts and get them where they need to go. The video and list below will help you get the RIGHT items in your cleaning bucket kits. (Only specific items can be included.)

In the near future, as the needs in the aftermath are identified, we may be collecting more for the survivors of Harvey, but this is what we can all do right now, as we trust in the promise of our calling from the Scriptures:

"They will rebuild the ancient ruins;
they will restore formerly deserted places;
they will renew ruined cities...." - Isaiah 61:4

The Church is Christ's hands and feet in the world, giving us the opportunity to share hope with those in need.  We trust in Jesus to be our strength.  (Philippians 4:13)  So as we pray, as we work, let the Lord guide us in loving ways, until the flooded earth becomes refreshed and every home is thoughtfully rebuilt.
